Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer, was awarded the Catalyst Award at the African Leadership Roundtable last week, held at The Michelangelo Hotel in New York City during the United Nations General Assembly.
The Catalyst Award honours leaders whose vision and action accelerate progress, inspire collaboration and create new opportunities, the organisers said.
The African Leadership Roundtable is an invitation-only convening of senior leaders who direct capital, policy and institutions across Africa, the Caribbean and the US.
In honouring her work, the African Leadership Roundtable said: "You are a defining voice in the global digital economy. Your leadership at MTN, one of Africa's most important companies, advances the infrastructure the world needs to solve complex problems, develop new ideas, and turn human ingenuity into economic possibility."
The organisers added: "In honouring you, we recognise a leader who has made corporate scale a force for public good, enabling people to learn, businesses to compete, communities to prosper, and African innovation to influence markets far beyond the continent."
Morafo has held her current role at MTN Group since February 2022, having joined the company as Group Executive in 2019. She is responsible for driving MTN's agenda on decarbonisation, digital human rights, rural connectivity, diversity and inclusion, and transparent corporate reporting.
The Roundtable featured Akunna Cook, former US deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs; Deniece Laurent-Mantey, executive director of the President's Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the US and senior State Department representative for the US-Africa Leaders Summit; and senior diplomats from the embassies of Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia and Ghana.
Discussion at the Roundtable focused on where capital is moving, the conditions that attract investment, and the infrastructure, technology, agribusiness and creative industries expanding across the continent.
