A partnership between MTN Zambia, Huawei, and Muen Network has introduced a new, low-cost digital service platform called 4G Cloud Smartphone solution , also known as Cloud Phone 2.0.
The platform aims to support Zambia's digital inclusion goals by providing high-quality yet affordable mobile digital services to local users. It combines a special software platform with compatible smart devices—a first-of-its-kind launch following the earlier version of the service.
This initiative represents a fresh step in digital economic cooperation, focusing on practical, everyday technology access for people in Zambia.
Digital inclusion is the core direction of Zambia's digital development. Through the National Digital Transformation Strategy, Zambia is committed to narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
Huawei's 18-year partnership with MTN Zambia has contributed to advancing the country's digital access, according to Alex Xing, Vice President of Huawei's MTN Account Department.
Speaking at a recent event, Xing highlighted that over two decades of operation in Zambia, Huawei has focused on enabling digital inclusion through technology. The long-standing collaboration with MTN has seen several major milestones, including building Zambia's first 3G, 4G and 5G networks.
The company has also supported MTN's digital inclusion vision through innovations like AI-powered energy-saving sites, solar-powered RuralStar solutions for remote areas, and pioneering low-cost smart cloud phone technology.
The Cloud Phone 2.0 integrates the Alola Device with Muen Network’s independently developed AppJoy platform, focusing on core public digital needs through three tailored service scenarios. First, a cloud short drama service delivers HD content in a click-to-watch, low-data-consumption format for convenient, fragmented entertainment.
Second, a cloud gaming experience is optimised for Zambia’s 4G networks, enabling smooth, low-latency, high-frame-rate gameplay without the need for high-end hardware. Third, a secure cloud storage function supports fast file transfers for both work and personal use.
Additionally, Cloud Phone 2.0 is bundled with a cost-effective data package, lowering the access barrier to digital services and meeting the needs of low-income users. This approach helps regional operators migrate existing 2G and 3G customers to 4G networks more quickly, boosting data revenue in the process.
Speaking at the event, MTN Zambia CEO Abbad Reda stated, “Today marks another milestone in our commitment to ensure every Zambian enjoys a modern, connected life. When we introduced the Alola 4G smartphone, our mission was clear: to break down the cost barriers that prevent millions from accessing the digital world.
"Today, that mission takes a bold step forward. With AppJoy, developed alongside our partners, every Alola device becomes more than a smartphone—it becomes a gateway to opportunity. Together, we will continue building a nation where everyone is connected, because when everyone is connected, everyone thrives.”
