MTN South Africa has announced an initiative to provide 4G handsets to more than 1.2 million of its prepaid customers for as little as R99 as part of its efforts to broaden digital inclusion.

The company stated that the program will ensure that South Africans are not left behind as the country transitions to 4G and 5G technologies.

According to MTN SA, the initiative will be carried out in three parts, beginning in May 2025 and running until the end of 2026. In the phase one, 5,000 carefully selected customers will receive 4G cellphones.

It said that selection will be based on consumption profiles, spending patterns, and tenure, with a focus on Gauteng.

During the second phase, the devices will be made available to around 130 000 subscribers nationwide. In the third phase, over 1.1 million MTN subscribers across the country would benefit.

According to MTN, the handsets will be preloaded with applications that will allow clients to access a wide range of digital tools and services.

It went on to state that one of the requirements for receiving the device is that it be used solely with an MTN SIM card.

“We are committed to going the extra mile to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital era. As the country transitions to technologies like 4G and 5G, it is vital that we take proactive steps to connect as many South Africans as possible,” said MTN South Africa CEO Charles Molapisi.

“Through this initiative, we are not only providing our customers with the tools they need to access digital services, but we are also playing an active role in helping to bridge the digital divide. Regardless of where they live, we want to ensure that all South Africans can access the digital world,” he added.

MTN has joined with Smartphone For All Pty Limited to make the plan a reality.

Babatunde Osho, founder and CEO of Smartphone For All Pty Limited, said: “Today marks a pivotal step in our journey to bridge the digital divide. By making smartphones more accessible and affordable, we are unlocking opportunities for millions who have been left behind in the digital economy.”
