Mobile operator MTN Group (MTN) announced that has ‘pre-qualified’ to compete for a telecoms license in Myanmar through its subsidiary in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai.
Myanmar is bordered by China, Thailand, India, Laos and Bangladesh.
According to a company statement, South African headquartered MTN is one of 12 operators that have been ‘pre-qualified’ to submit bids for two nation-wide licenses in that country.
Sifiso Dabengwa, MTN Group president and chief executive has said his company is excited about the potential of doing business in Myanmar.
“We have an unparalleled track record in bringing world-class telecommunications services to the 22 countries in which we are currently active,” he said.
“We are very confident that if awarded a licence, we will rapidly and efficiently deploy a world-class network infrastructure and services, as we have successfully done in 22 emerging markets internationally,” Dabengwa explained.
He added, “We look forward to making a significant contribution in Myanmar.”
The MTN Group has previously partnered in Myanmar with Amara Communications, a subsidiary of IGE which is a company with interests that include telecoms tower construction and SIM card distribution.
