MTN Rwanda CEO Monzer Ali says fintech and connectivity growth continue to power the operator’s strong performance in 2025.

MTN Rwanda has reported a profit after tax rebound of $9.9 million (Rwf 13.3 billion) in its third-quarter results, ending September 2025.

Driven largely by booming Mobile Money (MoMo) transactions, rising data usage and tight cost control, the mobile operator experienced a 222.7% increase in profits, compared to a loss in 2024, according to Rwanda MTN CEO Monzer Ali.

He credited the operator’s fintech ecosystem for continuing to anchor growth and advancing Rwanda’s digital inclusion agenda.

“MTN Rwanda delivered a strong performance in the first nine months of 2025, underpinned by solid commercial execution, disciplined cost management and continued momentum across our connectivity and fintech businesses,” he said.

Ali also revealed that the operator’s total subscriber base surpassed the eight million mark. In September 2024, Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority published a report that the country had 13.5 million active mobile subscribers.

The telco’s revenue grew by 14.2% to $161 million (Rwf 216.2 billion), while EBITDA rose by 36.7% to $67 million (Rwf 89.7 billion), pushing margins up to 41.2%, from 34% a year earlier.

Ali further noted growth in the company’s MoMo ecosystem, with active users up 12.2% year-on-year to 5.8 million, and MoMo revenues rising 30.2%.

“Fintech remains at the heart of our strategy, helping to deepen financial inclusion and power Rwanda’s transition to a cashless economy,” stated Ali.

The operator’s data business also showed resilience, with active data subscribers up 7.5% to 2.5 million, supported by rising 4G adoption and network improvements. MTN Rwanda recently launched ‘Tunga Taci na MTN’, a smartphone financing initiative with Yellow Digital Retailers, enabling customers to own devices through affordable payment plans, a move expected to boost smartphone penetration.

Rwanda’s macroeconomic environment also supported growth, with GDP expanding 7.2% in the first half of 2025 and the ICT sector recording 11.8% growth, reflecting the country’s digital transformation ambitions.

Looking ahead, MTN Rwanda said it will continue to focus on operational efficiency, innovation, and customer value management to sustain growth.
