MTN South Sudan is accelerating its efforts to expand its network into rural and underserved areas of the country.

The mobile operator plans to expand its network to three other places in Greater Pibor and Lakes regions, following the successful launch of its network in Abuyong Payam, Lakes state, over the weekend.

Michael Makuei, minister of information, communication technology, and postal services, presided over the event and announced telco's plans to expand.

The Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF) was a launch partner.

Makuei said the most recent and upcoming expansion of the network would enable cash transfers between the capital, Juba, and the beneficiary states, in addition to improving education and health services.

"This important exercise will be followed by another three networks in Greater Pibor and Cuebet to also help address security issues challenging the local authorities at the states," the minister added.

MTN Sudan's chief executive officer, Mapula Bodibe, promised to cooperate with the USAF to improve connectivity, provide appropriate power supply, and address network outages.

"We will continue working closely with the government to ensure that the network reaches unconnected areas and realizes the vision of moving towns to rural areas," she said.
