Mobile operator MTN has dismissed reports that it plans to discontinue the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) in South Africa.

Following the BlackBerry 10 launch announcement late last month, reports emerged speculating that the BIS service could be discontinued.

BIS forms part of an unlimited internet package that costs R59 per month on networks such as Vodacom.

“MTN wishes to clear the confusion and put its customers at ease by assuring them that the Blackberry BIS service will not be discontinued,” the operator said in a statement issued today.

Meanwhile, Vodacom South Africa has said on its Twitter account that it plans to launch its BlackBerry Z10 touch screen device package at an event in Gauteng tonight.
