MTN Nigeria targets fibre gaps with FlyX

MTN Nigeria has launched FlyX, a 5G fixed-broadband service designed to extend high-speed connectivity to areas where its fibre network is unavailable.

The service uses an outdoor unit to capture the 5G signal and an indoor unit to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to homes and small businesses.

MTN said the approach is designed for locations where indoor network reception is weak or FibreX is unavailable.

“FlyX is a clear example of how we are using our network strength to rethink broadband delivery, making it faster to deploy, easier to access, and more responsive to the needs of Nigerians,” said Egerton Idehen, MTN Nigeria’s chief broadband officer.

FlyX gives MTN another option for fixed broadband as it expands its fibre network and responds to rising demand for reliable connectivity.

The operator plans to connect eight million Nigerian homes to fibre within three years, a target previously reported by ITWeb Africa.

MTN has identified lengthy approval processes, the physical requirements of cable installation and the time needed to recover deployment costs as challenges that can slow fibre rollout compared with mobile network expansion. The operator has therefore been expanding its fixed-broadband offering while investing in FibreX.

FlyX is available on two plans. The 50Mbps plan costs ₦30,000 for 30 days, while the 100Mbps plan costs ₦45,000 for 30 days. Both plans offer unlimited data. The outdoor and indoor units are provided for use, with installation included.

The service also forms part of MTN Nigeria’s broader Connected Home and SME Broadband strategy. Idehen became the company's chief broadband officer in 2025 and oversees its broadband operations.

MTN's FibreX service provides fixed broadband over fibre, with current plans offering speeds of up to 150Mbps. FlyX provides an alternative where fibre connectivity is not yet available, subject to 5G coverage.
