MTN Mobile Money Zambia has launched a new service that enables customers to send money directly from their Mobile Money (MoMo) wallets to international bank accounts across countries in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
The telco said the initiative makes MoMo the first mobile money provider in the Southern African nation to offer direct wallet-to-bank international transfers into these key global markets.
This service allows customers in Zambia to transfer funds to overseas bank accounts using globally recognised banking identifiers such as SWIFT, IBAN, Sort Codes, and Routing Numbers, all through the MoMo App or via the USSD code.
MTN emphasised that the milestone marks a significant expansion of MTN MoMo Zambia’s international remittance offering, positioning the company as the first mobile network operator in the country to provide direct wallet-to-bank international transfers beyond South Africa and India, and into key global markets.
The firm went on to say the service supports the growing number of Zambians making international payments for education, medical services, business transactions, trade, and family support, while removing the need for physical visits to banks or over-reliance on informal and often costly money transfer channels.
Commenting on the launch, Komba Malukutila, CEO of MTN MoMo Zambia, said the service responds directly to customer needs for faster, more affordable, and fully compliant global money transfers.
“With this launch, MoMo customers can now send money directly to global bank accounts with confidence and ease. As the most affordable remittance service in Zambia, MoMo removes the high costs that have traditionally limited international money transfers, allowing customers to send money globally for as low as K5 ($0,25), whenever they need to,” he added.
