The company has issued a statement in which it reiterates its "unequivocal condemnation of any and all violence."
The statement reads: "As a leading pan-African telecommunications company with operations in 21 countries, MTN believes in the potential of an Africa whose nations pursue deeper trade, integration and cooperation."
"We actively encourage the dialogue necessary to maintain peace and sustain strong relationships and urge all our customers and stakeholders to support and defend the principles of human rights, diversity and inclusion and an integrated collaborative Africa."
On 2 September 2019 the Daily Maverick reported on the outbreak of xenophobic violence in Johannesburg, which the publication said has drawn criticism from African nations ahead of the African edition of the World Economic Forum in Cape Town.
According to the publication over 50 mainly foreign-owned shops and business premises were destroyed as violence spilled into the streets of Johannesburg South.
Independent Online reported that the Zimbabwe Cross Borders Transport Association (ZCBTA) warned it would halt all South Africa cross-border transport if attacks on foreign truck drivers proceed.
Moreover, Zambia's high commission in Pretoria has reportedly cautioned its citizens in South Africa to take extra precaution for their safety, and avoid trouble hotspots.
