MTN Group chairman Mcebisi Jonas has emphasised the importance of digital infrastructure in transforming Africa's economic future, stating that the telco's contribution goes beyond commercial interests to advancing infrastructure development across the continent.

Jonas was speaking during a recent MTN Group chairmen’s engagement session, where the company’s leadership aligned on strategic priorities and discussed geopolitical and regional factors affecting the group’s strategy.

MTN Group is Africa’s largest mobile network operator, serving more than 312 million subscribers across 19 markets as of May 2026.

Headquartered in Johannesburg, the company provides voice, data and fintech services, with a significant market presence in Nigeria and other African markets.

During the session, Jonas highlighted economic and geopolitical challenges facing the continent amid a rapidly evolving global environment.

He warned that disruptions in energy and food markets could worsen food insecurity for millions of people, while rising inflation and debt pressures continue to affect several African economies.

MTN said: “The Chairman emphasised Africa's unique position as the world’s youngest and fastest-growing continent, with a burgeoning workforce and consumer base.

“He stressed the vital role of digital infrastructure in reshaping the continent's economic future."

Jonas also called for greater cooperation among African nations to address shared challenges and opportunities, advocating a more integrated approach to strengthen the continent’s position in an increasingly fragmented global order.

He said Africa should not only adapt to global change, but also help shape a multilateral system that supports the continent’s interests and economic growth.
