MTN Cameroon, in partnership with Groupement ITGSTORE, has been awarded a contract worth more than $2.4 million (1.3 billion francs CFA) to acquire, install and deploy WLAN/SD-WAN infrastructure across six airports – Douala, Yaoundé, Garoua, Maroua, Ngaoundéré and Bafoussam.
The contract to modernise the country’s air transport hubs is part of the World Bank-backed Project for the Acceleration of digital Transformation of Cameroon (PATNUC).
The PATNUC initiative aims to bridge connectivity gaps in Cameroon’s aviation sector as part of its broader ambition to accelerate digital transformation nationwide.
In a decision published last week, Dr Fuaye Kenji Windfred Mfuh, PATNUC’s national coordinator, confirmed that the contractors will have six months to complete the rollout from notification of the order to proceed.
The contract is yet to be formally signed, with implementation to follow its formalisation.
In addition to the WLAN/SD-WAN deployment, a separate contract valued at $458,504.90 (260.7 million francs CFA) for the installation of dedicated charging stations at each airport was awarded to Groupement Central Achat Cameroun Sarl and BERCOTECH Sarl.
The charging stations are designed to provide travellers with access to power for mobile devices, laptops and other electronics. This contract stipulates a four-month execution period from notification of the order to proceed.
State-run Cameroon Telecommunications submitted bids for both contracts but was disqualified on technical grounds.
For the WLAN/SD-WAN deployment, evaluators noted the “absence of the module on training in the technical offer, with modules presented on Cisco while the equipment specified was Huawei.”
For the charging-station contract, Camtel’s proposal was rejected due to the “absence of manufacturer authorisation for the phone station charger”.
These shortcomings rendered the offers non-compliant with the tender requirements, leading to Camtel’s exclusion from the PATNUC airport contracts.
The awards are part of PATNUC’s broader effort to strengthen digital infrastructure and connectivity in Cameroon.
