The Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA) has been launched to spearhead the development of Mozambique’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, says the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC).
The inauguration of AMIA’s leadership executive, headed by AMIA president Donald Dimas, took place in Maputo on Thursday.
The creation of the body marks a critical step towards establishing a unified technical platform connecting government, academia, and the private sector, said Lourino Chemane, president of the board of directors of INTIC.
He said: "AMIA is expected to become a technical platform capable of bringing together the government, private sector, academia, technological community, and civil society, contributing to the development of AI solutions tailored to Mozambique's needs."
The move comes three months after the Southern African nation unveiled its draft National AI Strategy as part of a wider digital transformation agenda. AI is already transforming key local sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, banking, and public administration.
Government is actively establishing favourable conditions for digital transformation and the ethical deployment of emerging technologies, said Chemane.
He added that data governance remains central to this roadmap, with a national Data Governance Policy and Strategy currently under development.
INTIC noted that AI represents an immediate opportunity to accelerate social and economic growth, boost public sector efficiency, and foster digital inclusion across Mozambique.
