Technology firm Rapid Communications has launched a mobile phone online video streaming service called Vooka for the Kenyan market.
Vooka is planned to be accessible to users with edge and 3G enabled mobile phones. The advantage is that users with low bandwidth levels will be able to dedicate, stream, download, share, upload, create playlists and comment on videos, according to Rapid Communications.
Vooka content come in different categories such as movies, videos, live TV, documentaries and breaking news
Vooka further creates multiple profiles of each uploaded video, detects user bandwidth and delivers the most suitable video to the user bandwidth that allows a continuous playback, according to the company.
The Vooka technology is expected to be available to all subscribers on local networks Airtel, Safaricom and Yu Mobile. The service will attract a Sh 2 fee while video downloads will be charged at Sh10.
The chief executive officer of Rapid Communications, Anwar Hussein, has said the company developed the service amid the rapid take up of mobile phones Kenya.
The number of mobile subscribers in Kenya amount to around 30 million subscriptions, according to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK). Meanwhile, Kenya has also experienced rapid data growth among mobile users, as the country’s internet and data market topped 9.6 million subscriptions by end of March 2013, according to the CCK.
“Vooka takes a special place of pride within our product stable and we will be concentrating on African content making it the first of its kind produced and managed in Africa,” said Hussein.
Other features of the service are expected to include parental control of content.
