French media giant Canal+ executives committed to promote African talent and broadening access to broadcast services during a meeting with Malawi's communications regulator.

The discussions arose during a meeting with the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), when Canal+ representatives discussed their plans following the company's recent acquisition of MultiChoice Group.

According to MACRA, the discussion focused on the future of broadcasting in Malawi, including opportunities to increase content distribution and create jobs in the country's media sector.

MACRA board chairperson Chancy Gondwe said the development might usher in a new era for Malawi's broadcasting environment, potentially providing viewers access to a wider selection of television content.

Gondwe, however, urged the broadcaster to ensure full compliance with Malawi’s regulatory framework as it strengthens its presence in the local market.

During the engagement, MACRA director general Mayamiko Nkoloma also raised concerns from local television stations regarding the limited financial returns they receive when their content is carried on platforms operated by MultiChoice, including DStv and GOtv.

Nkoloma called on Canal+ to invest in Malawi’s digital and broadcasting ecosystem, particularly by supporting initiatives that strengthen local production capacity and expand digital services.

In response, Canal+ executives said the company remains open to continued engagement with Malawian broadcasters on content monetisation.

They argued that local television stations already benefit from wider exposure through their inclusion on regional platforms that reach audiences across Africa and beyond.

Canal+ currently operates in more than 40 countries and says it plans to continue supporting African creatives by investing in local content production and expanding access to its broadcasting platforms.
