Malawi is preparing to launch a monetisation-focused partnership with Meta and TikTok in the country.
It said that engagement with the platforms will begin in April.
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) announced this weekend that the first engagement will take place on the 16th in Lilongwe.
The organisation has asked content makers who want to participate to apply, with the deadline set for the 8th.
The regulator believes the initiative will generate revenue for local creators through content monetisation, while also positioning the government to benefit from value-added tax, increased youth employment, digital entrepreneurship growth, and greater participation in the global digital value chain.
“This is your opportunity to be part of a landmark conversation about content monetisation and help shape what it means for creators across,” MACRA invited content creators.
This comes just weeks after minister of finance Joseph Mwanamvekha unveiled the 2026-2027 National Budget, which outlined the government's intention to engage global digital platform operators to explore revenue prospects.
During the budget statement, Mwanamvekha stated that the government would begin structured negotiations with international digital platforms to establish regulatory and fiscal frameworks that will allow Malawi to benefit from the digital economy, such as taxation, innovation support, and local enterprise participation.
Dr. Shadric Namalomba, minister of information and communications technology, visited MACRA's headquarters in Blantyre to monitor progress on important projects as part of the government's digitalisation drive to develop Malawi's digital economy.
Namalomba recommended stronger partnerships with other government institutions to improve efficiency and avoid duplication of efforts.
“There are projects which are conducted in silos. Government institutions need to work together for consolidated gains in the digitalisation drive,” he said.
