Malawi's government has joined up with Zambia to provide affordable internet connectivity.

This comes just a month after the landlocked country was granted access to Elon Musk's SpaceX internet service via Starlink.

Malawi's minister of information and digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, claimed at the signing ceremony that low-cost internet will present citizens with new opportunities.

Zambia was represented by its minister of technology and research, Felix Mutati, who emphasised the importance of connectivity for economic advancement and opportunity expansion.

The agreement calls for the establishment of a 'Diplomatic Data Corridor' between Malawi's Electricity Supply Corporation and Zambia's Fibrecom, which will provide affordable internet access.

Malawi's communications regulator, MACRA, declared following the agreement that the Diplomatic Data Corridor represents a big step forward for both countries.

"The goal is to lower the cost of data," Minister Kunkuyu stated. "With the signing of this agreement, data landing costs into the country will be reduced, allowing Malawians to use the internet in a variety of industries."
