As elections in Malawi approach next month, voter information verification is now easier than ever thanks to the usage of USSD technology.
The process enables users to confirm their registration information, such as voting station number, without the requirement for internet connectivity.
The USSD platform works exactly like any other text service on a mobile phone, making it very easy to use. Because USSD does not require internet access, it may be used on any kind of phone, from a simple cell to a smartphone.
More importantly, no data is captured throughout the verification process, protecting user privacy and security.
Other benefits include the fact that anyone may verify their information using any phone. This is because the information is not stored on the device.
As a result, even if a user does not have a personal mobile device, they can still use the service. A single phone can be used by a whole village, making the system extremely inclusive.
According to Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Director of Media and Public Relations of the Malawi Electoral Commission, there is no need to verify ownership of the phone in question. The program just provides access to voter information and polling station numbers; no user data is tracked or saved.
He said: "No need to verify because a person can use any phone available to verify their details. one phone can be used by an entire village, any person can use any phone because the information is not retained on the handset."
