20 innovators have been selected for the inaugural National ICT Awards, based on innovation, impact, scalability and technical expertise, says the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).
The innovators were chosen from 226 entries and will showcase their solutions at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, followed by an awards night on 22 April.
The top two innovators will be selected to showcase their work at the Artificial Intelligence for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, in July, says the regulator.
The list of awardees includes those who have developed innovations in healthcare, education and finance.
While some of the innovations are fully operational, others are at the prototype stage but promise groundbreaking products.
MACRA is positioning itself not only as a regulator, but also as a central driver of national transformation, says Mayamiko Nkoloma, director general of MACRA.
The list includes Kwenda, a start-up that developed digital infrastructure to digitise travel services in Southern Africa.
This recognition is a testament to the creativity, resilience and vision that drive the team to harness solutions that solve real challenges, says Lumbani Gondwe, founder and CEO of Kwenda.
Also featured is Paychangu, a fintech company which developed a payment system for businesses that enables scan-to-pay transactions.
The awards show how much innovation has developed in the country, according to Joshua Mwendo, chief operating officer of Paychangu.
