MACRA director general Mayamiko Nkoloma stated that the engagement is an important step in aligning Malawi's digital economy with international monetisation standards.

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has launched a monetisation initiative for local content creators through a new partnership with Meta and TikTok.

Structured engagements between the regulator and the tech giants were held yesterday in Lilongwe.

The move aims to unlock earnings for digital creators, who have historically been unable to monetise their work despite significant local participation on social media.

MACRA says the initiative will create a pathway to youth employment and stimulate digital entrepreneurship. The partnership follows the presentation of the 2026-2027 National Budget, which outlined plans to establish fiscal frameworks for the digital economy.

MACRA says the initiative will allow the government to benefit from value-added tax while encouraging greater participation in the global digital economy.

The regulator believes the shift from mere digital participation to economic inclusion is essential for national growth.

"This is your chance to join a pivotal discussion about content monetisation and help define its impact on creators across the country,” says Mayamiko Nkoloma, acting director-general of MACRA.

The government is also initiating negotiations with international digital platforms to establish regulatory frameworks encompassing taxation and enterprise support.

MACRA says it is coordinating with both Meta and TikTok to explore how Malawian creators can begin earning directly from their content.

“We are working with platform providers to ensure Malawi meets eligibility thresholds, while also addressing policy, infrastructure and payment bottlenecks,” according to Nkoloma.

Selected creators are expected to meet platform representatives during the Lilongwe event to discuss the technical requirements for monetisation.

MACRA has invited local content makers to apply for participation, noting that the initiative marks a significant step in the Malawi 2063 national strategy
