The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has extended the transitional period for the introduction of the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS).

This decision was made in response to feedback from taxpayers and stakeholders who highlighted the need for more time to become familiar with the system's technical requirements and operational processes.

The extension is intended to allow a smoother and more informed transition from the present Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) to the more advanced EIS platform.

In a statement, MRA announced that the pilot phase, which commenced on 1 February 2026, will now run until 30 April 2026.

During this period, the new EIS will operate in parallel with existing EFDs to ensure a smooth transition.

The extension comes amid concerns raised by business operators in Limbe, who on Thursday petitioned the tax authority over the rollout of the new system.

The traders expressed dissatisfaction with the EIS, arguing that it intrudes on their privacy by requiring businesses to submit more detailed information about their enterprises to MRA.

Despite the concerns, MRA has reiterated that the use of EFDs will be discontinued after 30 April 2026, after which only the Electronic Invoicing System will be permitted.

The authority has assured taxpayers that it will provide technical support and assistance throughout the transition period to facilitate full onboarding onto the new system.

MRA has also encouraged businesses that have already migrated to the EIS to continue using it, while urging those yet to transition to take advantage of the available support.

The EIS is a software-based, user-friendly and cost-effective solution aimed at improving tax compliance and record keeping.

According to MRA, the system represents a significant shift from traditional EFDs and is designed to offer greater accessibility and functionality for businesses of all sizes.
