The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has increased its awareness campaign for the Data Protection Act by engaging tourism industry professionals to ensure compliance with the new legislation.

On Tuesday, November 11, MACRA hosted a workshop in Blantyre to inform tourist industry players about their responsibilities under the Act, which went into force on June 3, 2024.

Speaking at the session, MACRA's Head of Data Protection, Daniel Chiwoni, stated that the authority is conducting a series of meetings with various industries, with tourism being one of the most important in terms of data protection.

“It’s a new legislation, so most sectors are not aware of their obligations as entities that collect people’s personal information, as the data protection regulator, we are ensuring that hotels and other tourism establishments abide by ethical and sound data practices.”

Chiwoni emphasised that the Data Protection Act aims to protect people's privacy and warned that violating the law carries serious consequences.

“If an organization is found on the wrong side of the law, it can be fined up to K20 million,” he told ITWeb Africa. “We are also engaging Parliament to review and increase these fines so that no one compromises people’s privacy.”

He also cautioned organisations who collect personal data to ensure that it is done in accordance with the law and for legitimate reasons alone.

Greg Gange-Haris, Managing Director of Game Haven Lodge, commended MACRA for the project, stating that data privacy is critical to maintaining confidence among consumers.

“Personal data is really important and must be protected. It should never be shared without someone’s consent,” Gange-Haris told ITWeb Africa. “We thank MACRA for taking the time to sensitize us on these important issues.”
