Mobile technology is being used extensively in Malawi to improve service delivery and eradicate corruption in the public sector.
This is accomplished by establishing a toll-free national short code 332 as an official public reporting line.
Citizens can report unprofessional conduct, corruption, suspected abuse of office, and mismanagement of public office by government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) via any mobile network.
The platform was launched on Thursday to give a centralised and easy-to-remember reporting mechanism, enable citizens to report poor service delivery in public institutions, and enhance accountability and responsiveness within government MDAs.
It also aims to improve participatory governance through direct citizen feedback.
“The government is committed to promoting transparency, accountability and improved public service delivery across all MDAs. Above all, the government is committed to giving power to the people,” Justin Sadack Saidi, chief secretary to the government, stated.
He assured citizens that all reports received would be handled within established government procedures to ensure appropriate follow-up and resolution.
“The government assures the public that all reports will be treated with confidentiality and handled professionally. Citizens are encouraged to provide accurate and factual information to facilitate effective action,” Saidi said.
