Malawi’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has officially begun the issuance of electronic passports (e-passports), which have encrypted chips embedded with include other enhanced security features, in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The new e-passports are designed to improve the authenticity and protection of travel documents for Malawian citizens.

To support the rollout of the new passports, authorities have also introduced a permanent digital application platform that simplifies the passport application process. Developed in partnership with Madras Security Printers, the system enables applicants to submit applications online, pay via mobile money services or bank deposits, and collect their passports from designated centres across the country.

Pasqually Zulu, spokesperson for the department, said that samples of the new e-passports would be shared with Malawian embassies and consulates globally to facilitate smooth processing for international travellers.

"People will just register at immigration, pay through banks or mobile money and apply online. This will save people from spending a lot of money and time travelling long distances to central offices. We have conducted thorough security checks to protect the system from cyber threats," Zulu told the Malawi News Agency (Mana).

Last year, the country’s passport system was subject to a ransomware breach, which delayed the application and issuance process.

The new system is also expected to ease congestion at immigration offices, as applicants won‘t need to queue anymore to apply for passports.

Zulu added that the upgraded platform includes several other features, such as SMS alerts to inform applicants when their passports are ready and online appointment scheduling.
