The Department of E-Government is integrating the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services' e-services with the Bomalathu digital services platform under the World Bank-funded Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, following a meeting in Lilongwe on Friday.
The integration will enable members of the public to access selected immigration services online through the government's single digital services portal, while allowing the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services to retain ownership and control of its data and core operational systems.
Principal Secretary for E-Government, Prosper Mopiwa, described the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services as a strategic institution because of the high demand for its services, saying its inclusion on Bomalathu will expand access to government services without requiring people to visit government offices.
Mopiwa said the integration is intended to improve interoperability across government institutions while maintaining the security and integrity of immigration data through locally managed systems.
Director General of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Denis Chipao, welcomed the initiative, saying it would strengthen border management, passport processing and visa administration through improved information sharing.
Chipao said digitising immigration services is expected to reduce administrative bottlenecks and improve coordination between government agencies responsible for travel documents and border security.
The initiative forms part of the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, which aims to modernise public service delivery by expanding digital government services and improving interoperability across ministries, departments and agencies.
According to the Department of E-Government, 25 e-services from various ministries, departments and agencies are currently being onboarded onto the Bomalathu platform.
The platform is already used by the Malawi Revenue Authority and the National Registration Bureau and operates on locally hosted server infrastructure.
The government said this supports data sovereignty, system reliability and the secure management of public sector digital services.
The Department of E-Government said adding more high-demand services will expand access to digital public services through a single platform.
