Kwenda, a Malawi-based travel-tech start-up that is developing a digital infrastructure to digitise travel services in Southern Africa, has launched the country's first e-ticketing and travel technology platform.
The platform, a B2B2C marketplace, connects travel and transportation firms to an online booking system, allowing customers to book a range of travel services such as buses, tours, and lodging online.
Kwenda stated that it intends to ease travel through technology and connect Malawi's tourism sector to the global economy.
Edith Chihera, head of marketing and communications at Kwenda, said the platform is widely accessible and secure. “With Kwenda, users can book from anywhere, anytime even with a feature phone (No internet needed). There is no need to print tickets, carry cash, or travel just to make a booking,” she said.
Chihera noted that while sectors such as events, sports, and tourism are already reaping the benefits, it is also creating opportunities for small businesses and transport providers.
She said: “Events, sports, and tourism are seeing immediate benefits. But as we add accommodation and transport, we are also creating opportunities for small businesses, hospitality providers, and even transport companies who are part of the broader travel ecosystem.
“People expect digital access, especially younger generations. Whether it is convenience, safety during health crises, or transparency in pricing, digital services are the future. For African markets, digitization also means formalizing industries.”
