Malawi is going to build more telecommunications towers across the country this year to boost coverage.

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) are preparing to roll out the infrastructure.

Patrick Kabambe, CEO of the PPPC, explained that this was one of the Commission's initiatives to assist the regulator in connecting all Malawians.

“Soon the Commission and MACRA will erect 98 towers across the country, which will greatly improve quality of service,” he said.

Kabambe was speaking in Lilongwe on Wednesday at a courtesy meeting arranged by MACRA.

PPPC is Malawi's implementation agency for public-private partnerships, with a primary goal is to accelerate infrastructure development by leveraging private capital.

Speaking at the event, MACRA acting director general, Mayamiko Nkoloma, called on various sectors and stakeholders to collaborate and coordinate if Malawi is to build a resilient digital ecosystem.

“Despite the efforts sectors are making towards the digital agenda, progress is slow because sectors tend to work as individuals, which leads to duplication of efforts,” Nkoloma said.

Regarding the tower rollout, he said: “This is where collaboration is key. There is a need to engage with entities like Malawi University of Science and Technology to ensure young minds are challenged to come up with content or applications that can be accessed by Malawians.”
