Fixed wireless 4G LTE coverage has expanded across several neighbourhoods in Lilongwe following a partnership between Converged Technology Networks (CTN), unconnected.org, and the Internet Society, says Brian Munyao Longwe, chief executive officer of CTN.
The collaboration brings increased access to 4G LTE fixed wireless connectivity to more areas of the capital as the telecommunications company seeks to extend reliable internet services to underserved communities.
High-performance internet connectivity will also be delivered to more than 20 secondary schools free of charge on a long-term basis through the initiative, says Munyao Longwe.
Five new base stations have been switched on in Area 9, Area 25, Area 36, Airwing, and Chitipi following a recent network upgrade by CTN.
Services from the operator now cover multiple locations, including Areas 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 22, 23, 24, 25, 33, 36, 47, 50, and 51, alongside Falls Estates, Chitipi, Chitedze, Bibi, Njewa, Katete, Bypass, NRC, and Airwing.
Improving access to digital services for households, businesses, and educational institutions remains critical as demand for affordable and reliable internet grows in the capital.
Provision of free connectivity to secondary schools is expected to support students and teachers in accessing online learning resources, digital research materials, and administrative services.
