Nigeria's Lagos State has implemented a new digital house-numbering system as part of the Lagos Identity Project, which seeks to improve property identification and service delivery in local governments.
The project was officially launched yesterday, presided over by Dr. Olajide Babajide, special adviser to governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Enterprise Geographic Information System, who characterised the initiative as a significant step towards modernising municipal governance in the city.
Babajide explained that the system includes digital plates with QR codes and local government-specific colour codes.
These features will provide instant access to critical property information and are intended to modernise postal services, emergency response, tax administration, and urban planning in Lagos.
“This is not just about numbers on buildings, it is about giving residents a smarter, more secure and responsive city,” said Olajide.
The initiative begins with a pilot in Eti-Osa local government and will progressively expand to other 57 councils. Olajide emphasised that the system also permits Know-Your-Customer verification, which improves the security and transparency of property transactions.
Additionally, the new system is designed to effectively regulate rental activities, improve urban planning, and decrease property fraud.
