Kenya's mobile subs escalate

The size of Kenya's mobile market doesn't compare to countries such as Nigeria or South Africa, however the East African nation's number of mobile subscriptions could soon match its population.

The East African country's population in 2013 was 44.35 million people, states the World Bank.

And according to the Communication Authority's (CA) latest quarterly sector statistics report - Kenya's mobile subscribers increased to 33.6 million for the three months ended on 31 December 2014.

The CA reported that Kenya's mobile subscribers rose up from the previous period's 32.8 million.

The CA has stated that the rise in Kenya's mobile subscribers marks an increase of 2.6% during the quarter compared to the same period of the previous year where 0.02% was recorded.

Kenya's mobile penetration now stands at 82.6%, according to the telecoms authority.

Mobile operator Safaricom continues to dominate the East African country's mobile market increasing its market share by 0.7% during the quarter.

Safaricom's mobile subscription market share reached 67.4% up from 66.7%.

Telkom Kenya (Orange) gained 0.8% subscribers to reach 10.0% market share, and Indian headquartered telco, Airtel Kenya now has a 22.6% market share in the country.

Meanwhile, the country's fixed line numbers continue the decline trend having dropped by 6.6% during the same quarter under review.

The country's total number of fixed lines for the period reached 179, 990 compared to the 192, 778 lines reported in the previous quarter, said the CA report.

According to the Nigerian Communications Commission Nigeria's teledensity is now 100.59% and active lines or phone numbers on the telecoms operators' networks have reached more than 140 million.

In South Africa the country's mobile penetration rate is 154%, according to research firm BuddeComm.
