Kenya and Huawei are considering a partnership to boost digital skills in the public sector.

The Kenya School of Government (KSG) and Huawei Kenya have started discussions to build a strategic relationship to accelerate digital transformation in the country's public sector.

KSG is a statutory body established by Kenya's Parliament in 2012 (KSG Act No. 9) to transform Kenya's Public Service by enhancing public servants' knowledge, skills, and competencies through training.

Following a high-level meeting last week, the KSG and Huawei are discussing a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at providing government officials with advanced digital skills.

The initiative's focus on areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital governance aims to develop a future-ready workforce capable of improving public service delivery and institutional performance.

Prof. Nura Mohamed, KSG director general, welcomed the engagement, describing it as a catalyst for modernising the public sector.

He highlighted that the goal is to have a staff that is not just digitally literate, but also capable of using new technology tools to protect citizen data and enhance productivity.

Prof. Mohamed stated that equipping leaders with these future-ready skills is critical to advancing national development objectives.

“We welcome this strategic engagement with Huawei as a catalyst for accelerating digital transformation within Kenya’s public service'' Prof. Nura said.

''Our objective is to build a public workforce that is not only digitally literate but also proficient in applying cloud, AI, and cybersecurity tools to improve service delivery, enhance institutional performance, and safeguard citizen data,” he added.

Yuta Leng, the Public Affairs Director at Huawei Kenya, said: “Huawei remains committed to partnering with government institutions to support Kenya’s digital transformation.

“By leveraging our core expertise in technology and emerging digital solutions, we aim to improve public service delivery, support capacity building for civil servants, and help Kenya fully realize its digital economy ambitions.”

Further, a priority outcome of this collaboration will be the integration of practical AI and cloud technology applications into KSG’s executive development programs.

The partnership is also expected to bolster compliance with key regulatory frameworks, such as the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018 and the Data Protection Act of 2019, by ensuring public servants are well-versed in data privacy and cyber resilience.
