The high-level EU-Kenya Forum 2025 team met with President William Ruto.

Kenya's push towards a digital economy triggered new interest for better trade ties at the EU-Kenya Business Forum 2025, held in Nairobi yesterday.

The high-level gathering, titled "Digitalising Trade," focused on the EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the role of digital transformation in boosting trade and economic growth.

William Kabogo, cabinet secretary for information, communications, and the digital economy, joined Kenyan President William Ruto and other EU officials for a panel discussion on the EPA's prospects and challenges.

Kabogo emphasised the importance of Kenya embracing digital tools in order to strengthen its global trade position.

"This is the opportune time to digitise, connect and trade. The onus is on Kenyans to take the challenge and grow immensely," said Kabogo.

The Forum brought together key policymakers and business leaders, including EU commissioner for trade Maroš Šefčovič, vice-president of the European Investment Bank Thomas Östros, cabinet secretary for trade and industry Lee Kinyanjui, and Kenya Private Sector Association chairman Jaswinder Bedi.

Kabogo outlined the government's aggressive digital infrastructure strategy, including the deployment of a 100,000 km national fibre optic network to improve internet connectivity across the country.

“Digital trade is no longer a luxury but a necessity for businesses to thrive under the EU-EPA,” he added.

Further, the cabinet secretary for Information highlighted efforts to equip Kenyan youth with future-ready skills.

He said: “We are creating 1,450 digital hubs and Centres of Excellence to empower our young people with digital skills."

The EU-Kenya EPA is expected to unlock greater market access and foster innovation across sectors, with digitalisation a cornerstone for equitable and sustainable development.
