Ethiopian and Kenyan government officials have met in Addis Ababa under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project (HoAGDP) to advance regional integration through transport and the digital economy.

John Tanui, principal secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, led the Kenyan delegation.

The engagements brought together key institutions, including the Kenya National Highways Authority, ICT Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company.

The HoAGDP focuses on modernising the 764km Isiolo-Mandera road corridor to enhance connectivity between Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Funded partly by the World Bank, the project aims to boost economic growth in marginalised regions through road upgrades and digital connectivity via fibre optics.

The initiative also includes social infrastructure such as schools and markets.

Tanui commented: "Kenya continues to make significant investments in fibre optic and transport connectivity linking South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti.

“Under HoAGDP, key progress areas include agreement on bridge crossings at Malka Suftu and Malka Ladeni, alignment on One-Stop Border Posts, customs collaboration, and plans for nearly 1,000 km of fibre optic infrastructure.

“These investments position Kenya not only as a gateway, but as a strategic digital corridor hub connecting the region to Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, the Red Sea, and global markets.”
