An official Twitter account belonging to the defence forces of Kenya has been hacked.
On Sunday, a Twitter account that claims to be linked to hacktivist group Anonymous, announced that it had hacked into the official account. On Monday, the account was still compromised.
The Twitter account has been used by the ‘hacktivists’ to criticise issues such as corruption in Kenya.
In particular, the hacktivists have hit out at the Uhuru Kenyatta presidency.
“Corruption, tribalism & impunity are destroying KE. We should never have elected two criminals,” the hacktivists tweeted using the account.
Kenya’s defence forces have also been active in Somalia as part of an African Union (AU) peacekeeping force.
But the Kenyan army’s presence in Somalia has been used as a reason for militant group al Shabaab to launch a series of terror attacks in Kenya.
Kenyan military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir has, in turn, had his Twitter account hacked into as well. Chirchir has used his Twitter account to provide updates on Kenyan military attacks on al Shabaab in Somalia.
Hacking of these two Twitter accounts follows a ‘Saba Saba’ rally held by the opposition Coalition Reform for Democracy (CORD). The rally called for more open discussions on issues facing Kenyans such as terror attacks and ethnic representation in government.
