IHS Nigeria, a telecom infrastructure provider, says it has reduced fuel use by approximately 50 million litres as part of Project Green, its flagship renewable energy initiative aimed at decreasing the environmental imprint of telecom operations across the country.

Under Project Green, the company installed hybrid energy systems and connected thousands of telecom sites to the national grid, lowering dependency on fossil fuels and accelerating Nigeria's clean energy transition.

According to numbers supplied by the corporation, over 6,000 power facilities have been installed with hybrid systems, with approximately 4,000 connected to grid electricity.

Speaking at the Sustainability Table Discourse Series in Lagos, titled "Sustainability in Action: Scaling the Impact of a Thriving Future to Achieve the SDGs," Gimba Mohammed, IHS Nigeria's director of government and external relations, reaffirmed the company's commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations and long-term growth strategy.

“Across our markets, we continue to prioritize alternative energy sources to reduce dependency on diesel,” Mohammed said. “Sustainability is central to how we operate, from powering our sites responsibly to promoting sound environmental practices.”

Aside from clean energy deployment, IHS Nigeria has pursued a number of community-focused environmental initiatives. These include tree planting in eight states, the installation of solar lighting in impoverished communities, and partnerships to promote climate education among youth.

At the same session, Ghaith Al Hasan, director of engineering and design at IHS Nigeria, emphasised the need of partnerships in accelerating renewable adoption in telecoms.

“Our experience shows that the right technologies and collaborations are key to sustainability. We now operate renewable energy systems across more than 10,000 sites nationwide,” he said.

The discussion, which included officials, investors, and sustainability experts, highlighted the rising confluence of innovation, climate action, and infrastructure investment in creating Nigeria's sustainable future.
