Zambia’s burgeoning information and communications technology (ICT) sector now contributes 20% of the country's total tax revenue, asserting itself as the fastest-growing sector in the economy.
This is according to the PwC 2025 Telecommunications Survey Report, which showcases a thriving industry in the country, fuelled by technological advancements and solid government support.
According to the research, mobile penetration exceeds 100% and Internet connections approach 14 million, contributing significantly to economic growth and social development.
In addition, the value of mobile money transactions is now approaching ZMW4 billion (US$167.95 million).
The report paints a bright picture of the country's telecommunications sector, highlighting its crucial role as a driver of economic growth and social inclusion, spearheading the economic diversification from an over-reliance on copper mining.
Speaking in Lusaka at the launch of the report, Felix Mutati, minister of technology and science, said: “The PwC report serves as a testament to Zambia's forward momentum in the digital space, offering a positive outlook for policymakers, investors and consumers alike.”
The PwC report notes that the ICT sector has expanded rapidly, in part due to the increased demand for digital services during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the analysis, this growth has been actively encouraged by the government's commitment to ICT as a tool for national development.
