China’s new ambassador to Niger, Lü Guijun, seeks to enhance ties between the government of the West African country and China’s Huawei Technologies.

Having assumed his role this month, Huawei is one the Chinese organisations operating in Niger that Guijun has already visited.

The Chinese embassy in Niamey, Niger’s capital, confirmed a recent meeting between Guijun and Bai Limin, VP, Huawei.

"The two sides exchanged views on promoting China-Niger cooperation in the digital field," the embassy stated.

Huawei began operating in the landlocked Niger in 1998, the same year the company expanded to Africa.

The partnership builds on solid relations established in 1974 between China and Niger, some 14 years after the latter's independence from France.

Political problems in Niger, emanating from a military coup that deposed Mohamed Bazoum in 2023, have not damaged relations between the two countries.

"Relevant Chinese companies in the Nigerien market have been deeply engaged," Guijin said.

Apart from meeting the Huawei delegation, Guijun has, since assuming the ambassadorship, met executives of the China National Petroleum Corporation Niger Company and China-Africa Building Materials Niger as well as the Chinese Enterprise Contracting Engineering Association.
