The Republic of Guinea has launched NimbaPay, its national instant payment system, marking a step towards a more connected, inclusive and digitally enabled economy.

According to the government, the initiative was developed by the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea (BCRG) and implemented by Guinéenne de Monétique, enabling instant, secure and interoperable payments between participating financial institutions including banks, electronic money institutions and microfinance institutions.

The platform is expected to improve financial inclusion and reduce reliance on cash by enabling real-time, low-cost transactions across the financial system.

The system forms part of a broader vision to modernise the country’s financial framework.

It also benefited from strategic and technical support from the AfricaNenda Foundation, and is built on the open-source infrastructure of the Mojaloop Foundation, highlighting its potential impact on financial inclusion across the region.

NimbaPay is designed to unify a previously fragmented digital ecosystem and expand access to affordable digital financial services.

This rollout also aligns with the national Simandou 2040 programme, which prioritises using strategic economic revenues to invest in public digital infrastructure and structural diversification.

By removing long-standing barriers between financial institutions, NimbaPay allows individuals and businesses to transfer money seamlessly across the financial ecosystem, regardless of where they hold their account.

Looking ahead, future phases of the platform are expected to integrate government and public administration payments, alongside support for regional cross-border transactions.

The West African state joins Rwanda and Liberia as countries where AfricaNenda has supported the launch of a national instant payment system.

Dr Robert Ochola, managing director of AfricaNenda, said: “Each new instant payment system brings us closer to an Africa where individuals and businesses can transfer money instantly, safely and affordably.

“This achievement reflects the commitment of BCRG, as well as the collaboration of all stakeholders across the payments ecosystem. We are confident that NimbaPay will expand access to digital financial services, drive innovation and create new opportunities for individuals and businesses throughout Guinea.”

While Guinea’s fintech ecosystem remains relatively young compared with Africa’s most advanced markets, its trajectory is gaining momentum.

NimbaPay is building foundational infrastructure, similar to what has driven the rise of digital finance elsewhere on the continent, Guinea officials said.
