Glo Ghana has recorded its first loss in subscribers after five months of operations in the West African country.

Glo Ghana, a subsidiary of Globacom Nigeria, began operations in April 29 2012, gaining 2% market share in the first month, 4.2% in two months, 5% in the third month, and currently 6.5% of the total of 24,884,195 mobile subscriptions in the country, according to the latest data released by National Communication Authority (NCA).

The third quarter mobile voice subscriber statistics from the NCA, between August and September, has indicated that Glo’s subscriber base reduced by 3,254 from 1,613,688 to 1,610,434 subscribers, representing a marginal 0.2% drop.

The NCA results are based on activity over a 90-day period.

Losses in June could mean that some subscribers, who registered new SIMs on Glo in April and May, may have become inactive as early as June, Glo Ghana Head of Business, Patrick Awotwe admitted.

Other telco results

Regarding the country’s other mobile networks’ results, NCA has said Airtel lost 1,829 subscribers and finished Q3 2012 with 3,040,580 representing 12.2% of the total market share.

Meanwhile, the country’s second biggest telco Vodafone increased its subscriber base, and crossed the 5 million mark for the first time, strengthening its position with 5,027,207 or 20.2% of total market share, according to the NCA.

TiGo also closed the period with 3,757,977 subscribers, which represents 15.1% market share.

Ghana’s telecom market leader MTN increased its subscriber base marginally, and maintained its top position with 11,269,926 subscribers, representing 45.1% of total market share.

Expresso, meanwhile, decreased in subscriber base to 178,071, representing 0.7% of the total market share.

In terms of total mobile voice subscriptions, the figure stands at 24,884,195, or 99.7% of Ghana’s estimated population of 24,965,816 as reported by the Ghana Statistical Service in 2011.
