Ghana's Surfline chooses Huawei for second LTE phase

Ghana's wireless broadband and related services provider, Surfline has partnered with Chinese telecoms firm Huawei Technologies to roll-out the second phase of long term evolution (LTE)/4G in the country.

On Wednesday at an exclusive media briefing in Barcelona, Spain representatives from Surfline and Huawei completed the partnership deal valued at between $35 and $40 million.

According to Surfline this partnership will see the deployment of LTE throughout the rest of the country.

The expansion is planned to cover major cities such as Takoradi, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tamale and Ho, and include all key municipalities within the country.

Furthermore, it is expected to reach a targeted subscriber base of 500,000 by the end of 2016.

Surfline says it currently provides 90% of its network to a residential market, while 10% is for business.

However, with the expansion the "independent LTE provider" is looking to focus more on business.

Surfline executive chairman, John Taylor said, "We see Huawei as a true partner in our deployment to the rest of the country."

Huawei's Peng Song added, "As a strong LTE player in Africa – Surfline has already made big progress in a very short time by attracting a lot of subscribers.

"Today we are happy to have been chosen as your partner to work together with Surfline in your phase two. We are confident that we can work together with Surfline."

Last year Surfline partnered with French technology company Alcatel-Lucent for the first phase of a 4G network roll-out in that country.

According to Taylor the partnership with Huawei will ensure that the company goes further in its plans to deploy the 4G network for the rest of the country.

Through the partnership with Alcatel-Lucent we launched into- and currently cover Accra and Tema, now Huawei will help with the roll-out to the rest of the country, Taylor stated.
