Ethio Telecom has entered into a strategic partnership with Ericsson during the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona to significantly modernise Ethiopia's digital infrastructure, accelerating the nation's transition toward a robust digital economy.
The initiative aligns with the telco’s three-year “Next Horizon: Digital and Beyond 2028” strategy.
According to the operator, the scope of the initiative includes the expansion, modernisation, and 4G layering of 1,500 mobile sites within Ericsson’s network-managed areas, alongside the deployment of advanced technological capabilities.
This comprehensive upgrade will enhance network coverage, quality, and capacity nationwide. By replacing legacy infrastructure with modern technology, the national operator aims to substantially boost 4G coverage while expanding its 5G footprint, providing the high-speed connectivity required for modern digital growth.
A primary focus of the agreement is digital inclusion beyond urban centres. The project specifically targets 75 rural areas with tailored mobile technology solutions designed to bridge the connectivity gap in regions lacking commercial power.
The initiative includes the modernisation of 502 existing 3G stations, upgrading them to advanced 4G standards.
The project is expected to deliver significant performance gains within the Ericsson operation area, including the addition of 2.8 million in 4G carrying capacity to reach a total of 4.1 million.
Furthermore, the expansion of LTE services to 157 additional towns will bring the total number of connected towns to 276. This expansion represents a 45% increase in population coverage within the region, bringing the total coverage to 85%.
In a statement, the company noted that the agreement serves as a powerful foundation for the country’s growing digital ecosystem by providing vital support to national platforms such as telebirr, Zemen Gebeya, and Znexus.
