The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has pledged support for Eswatini’s digital development, prime minister Russell Dlamini said after meeting Doreen Bogdan-Martin, secretary-general of the ITU, in Geneva, Switzerland.
During the bilateral meeting at ITU headquarters on Sunday, Dlamini requested continued backing for the GovStack programme and greater assistance in improving affordable access to international fibre connectivity for landlocked countries such as Eswatini.
The ITU reaffirmed its commitment to Eswatini’s priorities and its ongoing partnership, Dlamini said.
The meeting followed a recent ITU capacity-building programme in Eswatini, during which local developers were trained on the GovStack framework.
GovStack, supported by the United Nations Development Programme and the ITU, is a global initiative that provides a standardised framework to help governments build scalable, open-source digital public services.
The ITU has also supported Eswatini’s efforts to secure satellite orbital resources. Following decisions at the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference 2023, Eswatini was among the African countries allocated orbital resources.
Dlamini also thanked the ITU for its support in developing Eswatini’s National Information and Communication Infrastructure Policy through the World Summit on the Information Society programme.
He said the policy helped establish the Ministry of ICT and later the Eswatini Communications Commission.
