Skipping 3G and rather investing directly in LTE is a strategy that Essar Telecom Kenya plans to adopt.
This is according to Essar Telecom Kenya’ country manager Madhur Taneja, who has said it is too late to start investing in 3G infrastructure after the world has started moving to 4G.
Taneja has added that the move could help save costs for the telco as well.
Essar has a controlling stake in Yu Mobile, which has 2.6 million subscribers. Yu is also Kenya’s fourth mobile operator with an over 8% share of the market in that country, according to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).
Yu is the only operator in Kenya that does not have a 3G network.
“If 3G will only be here for a short while, we would rather skip the generation and put our money were the future is,” Taneja has been quoted on Telecomlead.com.
Essar, though, has also had plans of selling of its majority 76% stake in Yu, according to reports last year.
