The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has introduced electronic SIM (eSIM) technology into the Egyptian market.

This comes after four major mobile operators completed the technical tests required to use the eSIM.

The eSIM is a digital SIM that allows consumers to activate their pricing plan from mobile operators without the requirement for a physical SIM card.

Orange Egypt has encouraged its subscribers to access the eSIM through the My Orange app, with new customers need to visit an Orange branch to enrol and activate the new service, in accordance with NTRA requirements.

According to Telecom Egypt, the eSIM service is offered to new and existing individual mobile users via sim exchange, as well as corporate mobile customers via sim swap alone.

The eSIM is part of the Authority's efforts to meet the goals outlined in Law No. 10 of 2003, particularly in keeping up with scientific, technical, and technological advancements in the sphere of communications.

"It is also more secure than traditional SIM cards, as it is integrated into the device and cannot be easily removed, which reduces the risk of theft or misuse, and contributes to improving the user experience and enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of communications service," according to a statement from NTRA.
