Egypt is accelerating the rollout of its Government Services Card system to integrate food subsidies and civil services into a single smart platform, says Raafat Hendy, minister of communications and information technology.
The unified smart card system is designed to streamline public service delivery by condensing multiple government benefits and civic services into a single digital channel.
The development follows a joint operational review between Hendy and Sherif Farouk, minister of supply and internal trade.
The project aligns with previous ITWeb Africa reporting on Egypt’s broader Digital Egypt strategy, which has seen the government invest heavily in expanding fiber-optic infrastructure to connect thousands of public offices and consolidate national databases to support automated citizen services.
Farouk said the smart card system forms a key element of the government’s efforts to establish an integrated digital services ecosystem while upgrading the efficiency of the national food subsidy framework through automated data verification.
Discussions focused on technical and operational integration, database sharing mechanisms, and leveraging existing public infrastructure to improve operational efficiency.
The two ministries are continuing joint efforts to strengthen the platform’s technical architecture and gradually widen the range of accessible services, Hendy added.
Inter-ministerial technical teams will maintain ongoing operational oversight to ensure database integration and support the wider public sector digital transformation agenda, Hendy concludes.
