Econet Wireless, buoyed by the massive take up of its mobile insurance product, EcoSure, is to introduce newer mobile insurance products, chief executive officer, Douglas Mboweni said on Monday.

Mboweni has claimed that EcoSure now has 1 million registered subscribers. Its rival operator, Telecel Zimbabwe also introduced its Telecare mobile insurance platform last year which it says is also doing well.

"We have a massive pipeline of new insurance products to satisfy every need that you can imagine. Some of these products have never been seen," he said.

Econet Wireless has more than 9 million registered users for its mobile network and over 3 million registered subscribers on the EcoCash mobile money platform.

Mboweni said last month that his company was geared to introduce more value added this year. Telecommunications companies are grappling with falling revenue volumes from the traditional voice category and are now diversifying their revenue streams, tapping into overlay and data services.

Under Ecosure, subscribers pay premiums through deductions from their mobile phones. Officials say the most popular package under the Ecosure platform is the one where subscribers pay $1 per month and gives out a pay-out of $1000.

The lowest option under the platform gives out $500 per month while the premium option, under which subscribers pay $5 per month, gives out $5000 in the event of loss.
