Econet Wireless in Zimbabwe is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) applications to enhance data demand on its network, as well as deploying more 5G base stations.
In a trade statement released Friday, Econet Wireless company secretary, Tatenda Ngowe, said the Zimbabwean mobile operator accelerated its transition to a digital services-led model during the quarter ending May 31.
She went on to say Econet used "the combined strengths of network infrastructure, financial platforms, and data-driven AI" solutions to boost its operations during the period under review.
“AI based applications which ride on the upgraded network are becoming core to our processes. This provides a platform for us to obtain an in-depth understanding of our customer needs including usage patterns that allow us to offer hyper-personalized services,” explained Ngowe.
Econet has been modernising its network in recent months. This is paying off, as "data traffic more than doubled" during the quarter ended May, while voice volumes increased by 44% compared to the same time last year.
The company stated that this was due to ongoing demand for connectivity and the continued expansion of its digital ecosystems.
“The sustained growth in data consumption underscores the pivotal role of data services in the future of the telecommunications sector, presenting significant untapped opportunities for long-term value creation,” added Ngowe.
To aid this, Econet deployed 20 new sites and extended its 5G coverage across Zimbabwe.
