Botswana's tax revenue authority has announced plans to develop an electronic service to help improve the country’s tax collection system.
“The first phase of the e-services will consist of filing of value added tax (VAT) returns and settlement of VAT liabilities, after which e-filling of other tax types will be rolled out,” said Keneilwe Morris, the commissioner general of the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).
“It is expected that towards mid 2013, a pilot process will be conducted on a selected number of taxpayers by allowing them to submit their VAT returns electronically,” he added.
BURS intends to rollout the service to all VAT registered taxpayers upon completion of the pilot phase.
Furthermore, the authorities are optimistic the system may help improve service delivery.
“The introduction of e-services will improve BURS’ responsiveness to customer needs and enhance efficiency within BURS,” said Morris.
Meanwhile BURS says it intends improve its current electronic fund transfer (EFT) system to address the challenges currently experienced with the payment method.
Last year BURS procured two X-ray scanners for examination and verification at a cost of P43 million to help detect contraband entering the country.
