Djibouti Telecom will extend the regional subsea cable, Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 (DARE1), along Africa’s east coast, adding a 3,200-3,500 km link from Mombasa to Mtunzini in South Africa.

According to the telco, the new route adds new landings in, Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania, broadens reach and enhances route diversity. It builds on the success of linking Djibouti, Somalia, and Kenya.

The extension will add capacity and route diversity for carriers, enterprises and cloud providers from East to Southern Africa, interconnecting at Mombasa (Nyali Trunk Station).

DARE1 cable system currently links key hubs on the Horn of Africa, connecting Djibouti City with Bosaso and Mogadishu, Somalia and Mombasa in Kenya with 36 tera-bits per second of capacity over three fibre pairs.

According to the company, the project is expected to start in 2026 and be ready for operations in 2028.

It is designed to deliver high-capacity, low-latency and resilient connectivity, strengthening regional integration and supports the growth of cloud, content and digital services.

Additionally, the expansion aims to enhance resilience by adding alternative paths and landings, support the region’s digital economy with scalable international bandwidth, and complement existing systems to provide reliable, low-latency connectivity to global hubs, emphasised Djibouti Telecom.

“Djibouti Telecom remains committed to connecting African markets with robust subsea infrastructure,” said the telco.
