Zambia's digital payment and service delivery platforms have collected more than K8.8 billion (US$488 million) while expanding access to public services, strengthening financial accountability, improving transparency and supporting the country's broader digital transformation agenda, according to the Office of the Accountant General.

Speaking at the recently concluded 2026 Zambia International Trade Fair on behalf of the accountant general, Daniel Mwewa, principal accountant at Zambia's Ministry of Finance and National Planning, said the Government Service Bus, Government Electronic Payment Gateway ZamPortal and ZamPay have become central to the government's efforts to modernise public service delivery and improve the efficiency of public financial management.

He said the platforms enable citizens and businesses to access and pay for a growing range of government services electronically through multiple channels, including bank transfers, debit and credit cards, mobile money platforms and cash deposits at commercial banks.

Mwewa said more than 400 government services have been onboarded onto the digital ecosystem, including passport applications, rent payments, road tax transactions and several other public services that can now be accessed online.

He said ZamPay provides a convenient, secure and transparent payment platform that improves revenue collection, reduces cash handling and leakages, strengthens accountability and makes government services more accessible.

By connecting citizens, businesses, financial institutions and government institutions on a single platform, ZamPay is helping bridge the gap between service delivery and payments while supporting a more efficient, digitally driven economy.

"The continued growth in collections and usage demonstrates increasing public confidence in digital service delivery and reflects the government's commitment to leveraging technology to improve convenience, transparency and accountability," said Mwewa.

He said the government has also extended the digital payment ecosystem to local authorities as part of its decentralisation agenda, with eight councils already onboarded and plans underway to roll out the platform to all 116 local authorities across the country.

The expansion allows residents and businesses to make electronic payments for property rates, business levies, permits and other local authority services.
